Overwatch Animated Shorts Announced

During BlizzCon, the Overwatch team announced it will be releasing a series of short animated features based on the Overwatch universe.

According to Chris Metzen, senior vice president of story and franchise development at Blizzard, the stories are designed in such a way that they can be watched in any order. In addition to the animated shorts, Blizzard will be releasing what it calls "comic shorts," which are free, static comics released online to support the game's story.

They're "nice, round stories," Metzen promised, and will work with the game and graphic novels to flesh out the universe of the Overwatch franchise.

Yesterday during the BlizzCon keynote, the company announced Overwatch will be coming to Xbox One and PS4 in addition to PC, and will be coming out Spring 2016 (or Autumn, if you're in the southern hemisphere). Quite a bit of cool stuff came out of the keynote yesterday, so to get caught up, make sure you check out our piece on everything that's happened so far at BlizzCon 2015.

Overwatch on PS4, Xbox One Not Merely a PC Port

While Overwatch was originally revealed as a PC-only game, Blizzard's team-based shooter was designed from day one with the console audience in mind.

"It was kind of a dream of ours," game director Jeff Kaplan said during today's Overwatch panel at BlizzCon (via Polygon). "When we started to make Overwatch... it was our goal from day one to have this game playable on console," he added. "Designing the game so it felt great on a console controller almost put this forced design elegance on us."

Kaplan also confirmed Overwatch won't support crossplay between PC and console, saying, "They're their own ecosystems." That said, console gamers can rest assured the title will feature "full integration with Xbox Live and PlayStation Network."

Ash vs Evil Dead: So Did He Travel Through Time?

While Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and star Bruce Campbell are all involved in Ash vs Evil Dead as executive producers, and Raimi co-wrote and directed the first episode, it’s Craig DiGregorio who is serving as showrunner and guiding the continuing story of Ash Williams (Campbell). I sat down with the Chuck, Reaper and Workaholics writing alum to discuss what it’s like becoming a part of this beloved franchise in such a crucial manner, while collaborating with the Evil Dead creators.

We also discussed Lucy Lawless’ character, Ruby, how much (if at all) Ash has changed since we last saw him and more – including whether we should assume the Ash in this show traveled back in time and experienced the events of Army of Darkness, given the show can’t directly bring up that film, thanks to legal issues.

Kick-Ass’ Chloe Moretz to Play Little Mermaid

Universal and Working Title have found its Little Mermaid star in Kick-Ass actress Chloe Moretz.

According to Variety, Moretz has been the frontrunner for quite a while, despite director Sofia Coppola's purported disinterest in bringing her on board. That said, Coppola has since left the project over creative differences.

The outlet notes that while the studio still wanted Moretz for the role, it didn't want to make an official announcement until a scriptwriter was settled upon. As such, this casting report comes coupled with word that Love Actually's Richard Curtis is in talks to write the film.

Zoe Quinn Memoir to Get Made Into a Movie

Former Sony Pictures boss Amy Pascal has won the film rights to Zoe Quinn's upcoming memoir Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself, with Avengers star Scarlett Johansson (among other unnamed actresses) reportedly interested in portraying the Depression Quest game designer.

Deadline says the "movie deal was based on a proposal titled Control Alt Delete, and tells the story of how Quinn, creator of such hip interactive games as Depression Quest, was targeted by a digital mob bent on upending her life when a blog post by her ex-boyfriend went viral. It sparked the widely-discussed Gamergate controversy and took a surprising turn when instead of running, she decided to fight back. It is a very inside look at gaming and nerd culture and what happens when one gets caught in the gears of that machine."
