Xbox One’s Backwards Compatibility: So Far, So Good

Xbox One's backwards compatibility feature was one of the biggest surprises to come out of E3—so naturally, when I finally got back to the office after the show, I wanted to test it out.

To my surprise, it works exactly as described. (That's not a dig at Microsoft—I'm just accustomed to pre-release software that tends to be, well...pre-release software.) After logging into an account with Preview Program access, I popped a Mass Effect disc into my Xbox One and immediately got a prompt to download a roughly 7GB file. A little less than 10 minutes later, the Xbox 360 startup screen flashed across my TV; the Mass Effect main menu followed shortly after. My screen did black out between the boot animation’s fade-out and the BioWare logo’s appearance, but we are still in a Preview phase of this feature, so it's possible that may not be the final experience. I repeated the experiment with Viva Piñata, and that went smoothly as well.

The Evil Within’s New Update Does Away With Letterboxing

Playing The Evil Within through a letterboxed gameplay window is no longer necessary.

A new update to the survival horror game has introduced an new Full-Screen mode that does away with the thick black bars on the top and bottom of the screen, instead giving players the option to fill all of the empty screen space with a view of the game world.

The update has also rebalanced casual difficulty to allow players more ammo and a more forgiving health bar.

This patch is currently available on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

The last of The Evil Within's DLC recently released and took place from a unique perspective. Read IGN's review to learn more about it, and check out this week's Deals with Gold to purchase it at a discount.

Star Wars: Battlefront – I Slaughtered as Luke Skywalker

Let me get this out of the way up front: I am terrible at Star Wars: Battlefront. This isn’t surprising to me, as I’m generally awful at shooters as a whole. I spent the first portion of my E3 demo as a standard Rebel Soldier and I was constantly getting creamed.

I probably died 15 times in the first few minutes. It was disheartening, to say the least, but damn it, this was Star Wars, so I pressed on. I had taken my umpteenth blaster bolt to the face when the most amazing thing happened. I respawned in a tunnel a good distance from the battle and noticed a power-up icon to my left. I snagged it, and there he was in the bottom corner of my screen: Luke Skywalker himself, waiting for me to take over.

Nintendo Isn’t Compromising Game Development for Amiibo

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken out to assure gamers that the rising popularity of amiibo won't affect its ever-present commitment to game development.

"The toys-to-life category is most developed here in the United States," Fils-Aime told Polygon. "Early on, we challenged our internal supply chain that this was going to be big and we needed to scale it up. The fact that we had supply challenges probably says we didn't think big enough. But certainly the demand has been exceedingly strong."
