Tatum: Gambit Changes Superhero Movie Tropes

Channing Tatum recently saw the first screenplay draft for the upcoming Gambit movie, and says it's going to put a new spin on the origin story.

e're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies," Tatum tells Empire magazine. "It’s always about saving the world (laughs), but maybe we’re going to shift things a little bit. There’s so many ways you can take

. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians Of The Galaxy route. All I can say is, I’m super excited.”

The X-Men standalone film stars Tatum as the titular, southern-fried hero. Tatum, who also hails from the South, says has a lot of love for Gambit.

Charter Communications Agrees to Buy and Merge with Time Warner Cable

Midwest cable and broadband provider Charter Communications has agreed to buy Time Warner Cable for $56.7 billion. Charter has also entered into an agreement to purchase Bright House Networks for $10.4 billion.

If approved by the FCC, all three providers would merge into one company called New Charter, selling services under the name Spectrum. More importantly, New Charter would become one of the top television and internet providers in the US, affecting one in six households, putting the company in the same league with Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon.

Game of Thrones: Episode Four — Sons of Winter Review

A friend once joked that HBO's Game of Thrones show should be renamed "A Series of Meetings," given its string of recent episodes featuring more exposition and chatter than action. I'm applying this moniker to Sons of Winter, the fourth episode of Telltale's Game of Thrones, because it marks a departure from the series' dramatic tension and, unfortunately, is starting to mimic its source material in all-too-predictable ways. That's not to say Sons of Winter is without its bright points, which come in the form of its secondary characters, who unravel their own backstories and add more interesting dilemmas.

I've praised the the game's focus on the Forrester family before; they are always the most interesting characters on screen at any given time, overshadowing cameos from the TV show's stars. It's been thoroughly delightful (and painful, in that masochistic, enjoyable way) watching Mira evolve into a sneaking schemer, seeing Rodrik struggle to balance the demands of Lady Forrester and his sister Talia without letting either down, and uncovering the mystery of the fabled North Grove with Gared. But their story is starting to to mimic the tale of the Starks--the downtrodden family at the center of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire--with the introduction of new characters and scenarios that feel like the writers are following a checklist. I can't list all those things here, as it would spoil nearly every turning point for the episode, but I can say that if you're familiar with the arcs of Sansa Stark and Jon Snow, so surprises are a rarity here.

We last left Gared Tuttle at the Wall in more trouble that he's ever been, Mira out of favor with Margaery Tyrell, Rodrik trying and failing to regain control of Ironrath, and Asher at the feet of Daenerys Targaryen. Most of the major choices in Sons of Winter revolve around our heroes trying to please one person at the expense of incurring another's wrath--something you've been doing in more exciting, meaningful ways for three episodes already. There's a lot of verbal fencing, but none of it reaches anxious heights of, say, Mira's first conversation with Cersei Lannister in Episode One. For example, Asher's plea to Daenerys for an army seems rushed and flat, and no matter what you tell her, she continues to threaten you. Having Mira eavesdropping on partygoers and potentially ruin fellow handmaiden Sera's life doesn't feel thrilling, and threats made towards her are all simple variants of "You'll pay for this!" and "We'll get you!" with little bite behind the bark.

Sons of Winter is about defense and safety--protecting yourself and your house, and keeping who you can safe. You can't keep everyone secure, though, and most decisions are predictable: side with Beshka or your uncle as Asher, side with Sera or not as Mira, side with your mother or the woman you love as Rodrik. These gambits of "him or her" decisions, one after another, have become tiring four episodes in. You have to decide how to use the information you have, who to reveal it to and with whom to use it as a bargaining chip. You'll make people angry, fall further out of favor if you choose to put your family first, and in one instance alter someone's only chance at having a good life.

You're still being pushed to think of your family first, endangering yourself in the process, but the emotional risks feel just out of sight here; not in the way that you can sometimes be blind to negative consequences, but in a way that you aren't taking time to weigh outcomes because there is no threat to consider. Having those threats simmer at every major choice has served Game of Thrones well in its first half, but Episode Four drops the tension entirely. In Mira's case, for instance, you gather loads of useful information in a short amount of time and are then able to bully and tease others as you please. But by making Mira powerful, much of what made her storyline frightening has been sidelined. She’s playing the Game of Thrones with no immediate consequence.

Perhaps it's because this is the part in Game of Thrones where it's time to talk more and do less, biding time and waiting for opportunity. But the episode's overall goal seems to be introducing more information, more context and characters, than throwing the Forresters directly into harm's way. There's nothing wrong with slowing down, but Sons of Winter slows to a crawl. Telltale's games are at their best when they dropping action sequences into unexpected junctures of down-time, threats that need to be dealt with immediately and quickly before you can proceed. An entire episode of mostly exposition and some lock-picking doesn't do well for mood-building, especially in Westeros, and the lengthiest action sequence--a string of running into cover, sneaking, and stealthily taking down guards--is devoid of any real stress or excitement.

There are a few emotional cling-points in Sons of Winter, and they revolve around the people who are willing to risk life and limb to help the Forresters. Most notable among these are several scenes with Beskha, the brash and cutthroat lady sellsword that has become Asher's best friend. You finally learn why she's so tough and why she's loath to return to Meereen, culminating in one of the most heartbreaking moments in the series so far. Her tragedy outweighs Asher's. By revealing her backstory to Asher, he gains some perspective in his relationship with her, which delivers several very sweet, enjoyable moments between the two that are welcome amid the episode's low points.

It is also refreshing to see Rodrik's struggle against the Whitehills finally move away from the repetitive cycle of events that characterized the series' first half. As the Whitehills realize they aren't as strong or powerful as they thought they were, unlikely allies come to Rodrik's aid. These supporting characters bring a refreshing change to the fight we've seen so far, revealing personalities that alternately clash and meld with the Forresters and bring out new, more individually personal facets of their struggle. Rodrik's beloved, Elaena Glenmore, becomes more important in Episode Four than she's been all series, evolving beyond a love interest and perhaps into something more dangerous as she pushes Rodrik to take action on her behalf.

A bit about the presence of the TV show characters: Daenerys is totally out of character. She's mean and hard in ways that she isn't in the TV series; in the show she is firm and always open to listening, but Telltale has made her into a vicious would-be despot. Her scene happens early in the episode and jarred me out of the experience; she just didn't fit, her behavior so off it was harder for me to find my emotional footing for the rest of the episode.

As Telltale's Game of Thrones passes its halfway mark, it takes a bit of a dip, staging a set of scenes that feel less like something you can control and more like something you can only passively watch. There's no real sense of agency in the choices you are offered, other than spinning a conversation in a certain direction before coming full circle to a pre-determined outcome. Sons of Winter feels like more set dressing, but what happens in its last two minutes is strong enough a taster to make you hunger for Episode Five. It's a bit disappointing that the rest of the episode doesn't quite hit the dramatic bar Telltale has already set for itself.

Evolve’s New Free DLC is Out Now

Today, 2K has announced that Evolve is getting a new mode called Arena, and it’s live right now as you’re reading this.

In this new mode, a stage 2 monster squares off against a full team of four hunters to the death in a best of three series played within enclosed arenas. Each of Evolve’s 14 maps will host five such arenas each for a total of 70 possible battlegrounds.

This is significant for players who don’t like having to track the monster in order to fight them, as they now have a way to get straight into an engagement without any of the build up. Perhaps best of all, Evolve’s new Arena mode is completely free.

Until Dawn Release Date Announced

Sony has announced that upcoming horror game Until Dawn will release on August 25 in North America, August 26 in most PAL territories, and August 28 in UK and Ireland.

Additionally, Peter Stormare (Prison Break, The Big Lebowski, Arrow) has been revealed as a new cast member. Pre-orders are also available from today, and doing so will unlock a special bonus scene for free.

Three editions of Until Dawn will be available, the standard edition, an extended edition, and a steelbook edition. The steelbook edition will only be available in some countries, the full list of which can be found on the PS Blog.

Release Date and Pre-Order Bonuses Confirmed for NBA 2K16

Players who pre-order NBA 2K16 will be able to play the game four days in advance of the release date, September 29.

Pre-orders will also receive 10,000 VC (virtual currency), with current-gen versions receiving three MyTEAM Emerald Packs (each with a guaranteed Emerald player), and last-gen players receiving a MyTEAM Gold Booster Pack with a guaranteed Gold player and four additional gold items.

NBA 2K16 will release on the PlayStation 3 and 4, and Xbox One and 360, on September 29 in both Europe and North America.

We recently learned that the game will boast three different covers -- Stephen Curry, James Harden, and Kevin Durant -- and reported that filmmaker Spike Lee is apparently involved with the career mode in NBA 2K16.

The Witcher Was Nearly A Diablo-Inspired Top-Down ARPG

The Witcher developer CD Projekt RED originally pitched the popular RPG as a top-down, Diablo-esque action role-playing game.

In a recent video, former project lead Ryszard Chojnowski offered insight into the "humble beginnings" of the RPG series, revealing that the 2002 demo -- inspired by Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and built using the same engine that powered 1999's Mortyr -- had little progression, only one Witcher sign, and hadn't even placed Geralt as the leading character, a decision that the developer thought kept in line with the novels..

A year later, the demo version was dropped, and the studio began the four-year campaign to develop The Witcher as we know it today.

Bioshock Lead Designer Reveals New Horror Game

There's something strange about the estate on Echo Bluff.

After months of seeing the place in haunting visions, Cassie Thornton has finally found the real thing, overlooking the ocean in Gloucester, Massachusetts. And now, she's taking the chance to explore it, despite the fact that she's blind.

So goes the description for Perception, the Kickstarter project from The Deep End Games. The studio is composed almost entirely of developers who worked on Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite, including Bill Gardner, The Deep End's founder. He was design director on Bioshock, and lead designer on Infinite, both of which garnered critical praise in their own right for their first-person storytelling. With Perception, though, Gardner wants to change how horror games are played.

Ninja Theory Builds a Better Lightsaber

No disrespect to Mickey or Woody or Elsa, but I’ve always only ever really had two questions for the team beyond Disney’s toys-to-life game, Infinity. First, where’s Spiderman? And second, where’s Luke Skywalker? After last year’s rollout of Marvel in Infinity’s 2.0 launch, it seemed a sure bet that Star Wars wouldn’t be far behind. Disney finally revealed that Star Wars is coming this fall in a three-part rollout.

The first piece is called Twilight of the Empire, and it focuses on the prequel trilogy and The Clone Wars cartoon. (Information on the other two parts – Rise of the Empire and The Force Awakens – has not yet been released.) The core of the story involves leading the Republic forces in a battle against the Separatists.

This Week’s Xbox Live Deals With Gold Are…

This week's Deals with Gold have been revealed, discounting a number of noteworthy titles across both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

On the new-gen front, Xbox One owners can purchase a "Digital Pro" copy of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare for 33 percent off, while the "Gold" edition has received a 17 percent price reduction. Major Nelson's blog also notes that Screamride and Alien: Isolation have been discounted as well, with the former being 33 percent off and the latter discounted by 60 percent.

Both Alien: Isolation and Advanced Warfare have been discounted for Xbox 360 owners as well, with Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, and World at War all receiving 50 percent price reductions, too.
