Lava tubes on the Moon large enough to house cities could be structurally stable enough for human habitats, according to a theoretical study presented at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.

It’s been long proposed that volcanic structures could be used in future missions and industrial operations as manned lunar bases. The empty tubes are ideal candidates to host self-enclosed habitats as they reduce the construction needed for heavy shielding, provide environmental control and protection from cosmic radiation and meteorite impacts.
