New details regarding Rise of the Tomb Raider's gameplay, story, and setting were revealed in Game Informer's March cover story.

Some spoilers for 2013's Tomb Raider follow:

After the events of Tomb Raider, Lara Croft is, mentally, in a difficult place. We saw as much in the debut trailer, which showed us a hooded Lara discussing her trauma with a professional.

After she encountered an immortal being, Lara spent a year researching eternal life to both understand and prove what she saw. This research leads on her on a quest to find Kitezh, a mythical city both founded and lost in what is now Russia's Siberian tundra.

According to Gallagher, Nixxes proved they could handle development by impressing the team enough to pass development over.
