Why Ivan Reitman Isn’t Directing Ghostbusters Reboot
Ivan Reitman has been talking about the forthcoming Ghostbusters reboot, explaining why he isn’t directing, and also why he thinks an all-female cast is the right way to go.
Reitman is promoting sports movie Draft Day – which hit DVD in the UK this week – and unfortunately we spoke to him a couple of hours before Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon were announced as the all-new Ghostbusters. So instead we asked him why he won’t be directing.
“Between Billy Murray’s reluctance in doing another one – and especially when I returned from Harold Ramis’s funeral – I realised that actually, I may be able to talk Bill into doing another one, but I certainly can’t talk Harold into it” explained the director of the first two flicks. “But I felt it needed fresh eyes as a director and somebody with new ideas. I had already done two of them and I love the franchise, so I would continue as a producer but give somebody else the opportunity to bring their own ideas to this wonderful franchise.”

Apple’s Tim Cook Reveals Smartwatch Release Month
Apple CEO Tim Cook says the company’s smartwatch has an expected shipping date of April, 2015.
The news comes via Apple’s first quarter earning call, in which Cook revealed a quarterly revenue of $74.6 billion for the Cupertino giant compared to $57.6 billion for this quarter one year ago.
The smartwatch is Apple’s first entry into the wearable tech sector. Instead of the touch controls Apple users have grown accustomed to, the watch opts for a dial on the side – known as the digital crown – to accommodate for the smaller form factor.
Touch functionality is still present however, as the display is capable of sensing both touch and force – meaning it knows the difference between a tap and a hold.
Designer Creates Shockingly Realistic Environment In Unreal Engine 4
A level designer has produced one of the most astonishingly realistic 3D environments we've ever seen.
The video - dubbed "Unreal Paris" - was created by Dishonored level designer Benoît Dereau using Unreal Engine 4 and showcases just what the software can do.
Whilst still merely considered a demo, the video takes you through the environment - a contemporary Parisian apartment - demonstrating acute attention to detail that includes some of the most realistic texture, shadow, reflection and light effects seen to date.
For the very latest on all things Unreal - including the latest games being developed with the software - keep it right here on IGN.
Why It’s OK If You’ve Never Played Monster Hunter Before
Confession time: I have never played Monster Hunter.
That feels better.
I’ve always felt like I should, that it’d be one of those games I’d love and get lost in, but I’ve just never got round to it. I’ve been thinking about why that is, and have concluded it’s something to do with how it’s habitually presented. Nearly every piece you read begins with some sort of preamble about how it’s huge in Japan but has never caught on here in the West. It’s off-putting, and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, with each new Monster Hunter game relegated to cult hit even before it’s released.
What happens if you put all of that aside? What’s Monster Hunter really like, if you approach it simply as a game about fighting majestic and weird creatures? I’m not usually one for making New Year resolutions – becoming a better person or getting in shape seem like hard work – but in 2015 I want to play a more diverse set of games, exploring new genres and unfamiliar series. And monster hunting, well, that seems like a fun place to start.
Nintendo Remains in the Black but Halves Forecasts
Nintendo has recorded the second quarter of being in the black with the release of its financial results for the third fiscal quarter.
Despite the positive perspective, net sales and operating income are expected to be lower than originally forecasted based on the sales performance for the nine months ending December 31, 2014 and onwards. Nintendo doesn't expect to meet the forecasted ¥40 billion yen in operating profit for the financial year, resulting in the company slashing it to ¥20 billion; however, the company expects a net profit of ¥30 billion this fiscal year.
"We've made some progress in profit but in many ways we didn't score perfectly," Reuters reports CEO Satoru Iwata as saying during an press event today.
FCC Commissioner Dismisses Hotel Wi-Fi Blocking Petition
The Marriott, and other hotels, shouldn't be able to block users Wi-Fi hotspots, FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel said, speaking at the State of the Net conference.
Rosenworcel called for the FCC to dismiss a petition from the Marriott and The American Hotel and Lodging Association seeking permission from the commission to allow it to "manage" Wi-Fi networks by blocking personal hotspots because of apparent network security concerns.
"There are other ways to address legitimate security concerns—but this is a bad idea," Rosenworcel said. We’ve all been hotel guests. Wi-Fi is the difference between working in the comfort and privacy of your own room and being relegated to the business center. It’s the difference between streaming the content of your choosing and being stuck with the hotel’s on-demand selection. It’s the difference between seamlessly getting your work done at a conference and getting saddled with special fees and charges just to connect.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Has Microtransactions
Resident Evil: Revelations 2, upcoming episodic horror adventure, will feature microstrantions, Capcom confirmed today.
A Capcom representative issued a statement to Kotaku today clarifying that the microtransactions are included in the optional Raid Mode and not “within the main campaign.” The Raid Mode features two “life crystals” variants that are used to respawn, which players can either earn or purchase.

“The crystals essentially act as continues (re spawns) in Raid mode when players die,” the representative explains. “Blue life crystals can be earned through playing daily missions and red life crystals can be bought.
